While the triggering of this anxiety mechanism is mis-timed (disordered) and the resulting thoughts can be very disturbing, the response itself is actually natural. It is provided for the purpose of responding to any real dangers that might occur and that require being dealt-with (i.e. fleeing from danger or fighting a real threat). With "anxiety disorders" this natural response occurs at inappropriate times or in a "disordered" fashion.
Treatment
Catastrophic thinking is relieved when the underlying anxiety disorder has been treated. More regarding anxiety treatments, will be addressed in the chapter that follows.
